Genomics: From Medicine To the Environment

The February Monthly Luncheon:  The importance of genome research for improving human health and upgrading the environment

The J. Craig Venter Institute in Rockville, Maryland hosted our February 21 Lunch Meeting where Dr. Venter talked about the exciting research programs at his institute in the areas of environmental genomics, genomic medicine, parasite genomics, synthetic genome development, etc. For example, JCVI is collecting sea water from around the globe to identify new life forms whose genetic secrets could help solve current global crises in energy, the environment and health.  For more, go to: www.bioitcoalition.org/aboutus.PR.07_2.html.

From the Bench to the Bedside to the Bank

The March Monthly Luncheon:   Building a Business and Developing a Therapy Based Upon Basic Research

The Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC hosted our March meeting in which the featured speaker was Dr. David Dolphin, Ph.D., CEO, British Columbia Innovation Council, Vice-President for Technology Development, Quadra Logic Technologies, Canada's 2006 Herzberg Gold Medal winner, and Inventor of Visudyne, the leading drug for macular degeneration.  He was introduced by Dr. Suzanne Fortier, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).  Dr. Dolphin's entertaining and informative presentation included organic chemistry, a history of vampires and a quick study of porfyrins, naturally occurring light absorbing biochemicals. He described investigations regarding the use of porfyrins for the treatment of cancer lead to the creation of Quadra Logic Technologies and the development of Visudyne (for the treatment of macular degeneration), a drug that has total sales of over 2 billion dollars.
